Do you workout while you are on vacation?

Last week the kids and I went on a fantastic vacation to the beach.  I packed up a few of my favorite fitness tools and made the time each morning for a quick workout.

Some people like to drink and relax on vacation.
Some people like to workout on vacation.
And some people…..they like to do both!  :)  IMG_9335(man-makers are a perfect exercise for a quick, yet intense, workout.
Check out my instagram for a video clip of how to do this one!)

Did I have to workout on vacation?  Absolutely not.
I wanted to because I know it makes me feel better both physically and mentally.
I love working out in the hot summer sun with a cool ocean breeze.  IMG_9202
I am my OWN motivation, whether I am at home or on vacation.

After a quick morning workout, there was plenty of time for beach time and craziness by the pool.  There might have even been a few adult beverages consumed as well.  It was vacation after all…..right?!IMG_9341

3 IMPACT HABITS to Reach Goals Faster

By Nigel Cook

We all want to reach our goals. We've got exciting plans, cool projects and important things we want to accomplish.

Maybe you want to start a business, get skilled at something or get your finances under control. Or you might want to eat healthier, exercise regularly or start a morning meditation habit.

The sad thing is that many of us just aren't reaching our goals. We take a few steps and then stop. We promise ourselves we'll take up a new habit or routine – we last a few days, maybe a week, and then we're back to our old ways.

We forget, we get distracted. We come up against too many obstacles. We feel overwhelmed by all the tasks involved. Life gets busy. Old habits take precedence over the new habits we really need to cultivate.

How can we radically improve our success in reaching our goals?

Here are the 3 high-impact habits you should cultivate if you want to achieve your goals. The reason many of us don't reach our objectives faster is because we're usually doing the opposite of these essential habits.

1. The Habit of Focus

Develop single-minded focus.

There are a lot of reasons behind a lack of focus – busy schedules, an inability to say 'no', choosing immediate pleasure over long-term rewards, time-consuming responsibilities, time-consuming people (red alert!) and other reasons.

If we want to reach our goals, we need to do something different. We have to stop zig-zagging all over. We have to give up 'start-stop-maybe later'. We need laser-like focus.

Work on one thing at a time. Completing tasks is vital to feeling motivated and successful. It feels unsettling to have a list of half-finished or barely-started goals, projects and tasks. Commit to the task that's in front of you. Take it to completion.

Minimize distractions. You already know which ones. Entertainment, email, social media and sometimes even certain people. Yes, even funny cat videos (well, save those for the weekend maybe).

“Focus means saying 'no' to everything while working on your task, project or goal. Block out the world and say 'yes' to the task in front of you.”

Develop both short-term and long-term focus. Short-term focus helps you with your immediate tasks and long-term focus is what directs you to keep giving attention and energy to your long-term goals.

When you apply long-term focus, you're committing to something over the long haul. You might only spend a few days a week on your goal, but over a period of several months, you keep dedicating time to your goal on a regular basis.

2. The Habit of Determination

Cultivate relentless determination.

Imagine a hungry dog in your kitchen and you've placed a big, juicy steak on the counter, just slightly out of his reach. He becomes a slobbering mess in anticipation of this perfect treat. That dog is going to try again and again to get that steak. He'll try all day, he wants it that badly.
That's determination. You need to be that slobbering, hungry dog.

Ok, maybe I've gone too far with that one, but cultivating determination is essential if we want to make faster progress. Determination = intensity. It's heat. Passion. Hunger.

Quite often, we'll only make one or two attempts at something new or difficult. When we don't get quick results, we label our efforts (and ourselves) as a failure. The real problem is we just gave up too soon.

Whatever you're working on, commit to it. And each day, commit to it just a little bit more. Keep coming back to it and don't let it out of your sight.

Remind yourself daily why you want your goals. Vividly imagine all the positive benefits you'll get and how amazing you'll feel once you've opened your first business or become conversational in Italian or started your morning Yoga routine.

This will be the fuel that drives your determination. Drink up. Slobbering is optional.

3. The Habit of Continual Improvement

Make small, steady improvements.

Learning, growth and skill development usually happen over a period of time. We don't have to be immediately amazing at something.

If you focus on making incremental improvements every time you work on your tasks and goals, before you know it, you will be skilled at your task, perhaps even highly-skilled.

Each time you're doing an activity, review what didn't work. Resolve to do something different. Make adjustments. Refine your process.

Do this again and again every time and you'll see that your confidence and skill level will grow massively.

By this time next year, you could very well be a tightrope-walking, fire-eating opera singer. Or whatever your goals might be. Am I the only one going for that one?

Conclusion

These three habits work together. They all complement and augment each other.

Think how powerful your actions will be once you become focused, determined and are continually making small improvements. You'll be an unstoppable force.

Going after your goals doesn't have to be a painful process. In fact, using these high-impact habits, you'll even enjoy tackling your goals and blowing past obstacles. So go for it. Your goals are worth it.

10 SIMPLE Ways to Drink More Water

iStockphoto / Thinkstock
While keeping your body hydrated is one of the easiest ways to improve your health, research shows that nearly half of us are dehydrated. To stay healthy and hydrated, you should be drinking at least half your body weight in ounces of water daily. If you don’t drink enough, it can affect your body temperature, energy, brain function, digestion, mood, performance, and joint health. Use the tips below to hydrate better and improve your health.

1. Drink a glass first thing in the morning.

When you wake up, drink a glass of water before enjoying your morning cup of Joe, tea, or juice. Drinking water will replace fluids lost during the night and jumpstart your hydration for the day.

2. Do a mid-day hydration check.

Looking at the color of your urine is the easiest way to monitor your hydration. If your urine is darker than lemonade, you're dehydrated. Make it your daily goal to have clear urine by 3 p.m. It will give you a good idea of how well you're hydrating in the morning. If your urine isn’t clear, drink water immediately and work to hydrate better the rest of the day.

3. Naturally flavor your water.

Water doesn't have to be boring. Add a burst of flavor with sliced fruit like lemon, lime, orange, watermelon, mango, kiwi, pineapples, berries, pineapple, cantaloupe, and grapes. Cucumbers with thyme, lemon with mint leaves, and sliced ginger root are also tasty options.

4. Keep a water bottle with you at all times.

To stay hydrated, keep a one-liter bottle with you at all times. A liter is equal to 33 ounces, so plan to fill up your water bottle based on your personal hydration needs. If you weigh 120 pounds, that's two to three refills per day.

5. Replace soda, juice, and coffee with water.

While it's clear that water is the best option for hydration, sodas, juices, and coffee drinks can be tempting. Not only are they loaded with calories and sugar, they can also dehydrate your body. As a starting point, work to decrease your intake of these drinks to one per day. Substituting water for a 20-ounce soda will save you about 240 calories. This can help with hydration and weight management.

6. Set a reminder.

It's easy to forget to hydrate until you feel thirsty, but by that time you're already dehydrated. Set a schedule or calendar reminder a few times throughout the day to help you remember to refill your glass and hydrate.

7. Eat more fruits and veggies.

Eat two to three servings of fruits and vegetables at every meal. Unlike processed foods (sugar, flour, salty snacks, lunch-style meats), fruits and vegetables are high in water and minerals. For a list of water-filled foods to add to your diet, read "22 Foods to Keep You Hydrated."

8. Hydrate when you exercise.

Just 2 percent dehydration can lead to a 20 percent decrease in performance. During the day drink 1/2 to 1 ounce of water for every pound you weigh. In the two hours before you exercise, drink 16 ounces. Follow that with 4-6 gulps of water every 15 minutes during your workout. After you exercise, drink 16 ounces of water for every pound of weight you lost during training.

9. Drink before you eat.

Before each meal, drink at least three gulps of water. Thirst can often be confused with hunger. To avoid overeating and dehydration, drink a few gulps of water at the first feelings of thirst or hunger. Wait a bit and then decide if you're really hungry.

10. Finish your day with water.

Before you go to bed, drink a glass of water to stay hydrated overnight. If you prefer a hot beverage to kickstart or end your day, drink hot water with lemon.

Why You Need a Weight Loss Buddy

Everyone needs weight loss buddies. Don't try to do weight loss alone! Going it alone will hurt your chances to achieve permanent weight loss. Why? Because permanent weight loss takes a short-term and long-term commitment from you....commitments are hard to keep all by yourself.

Research has proven that you are more likely to succeed with your weight loss and fat loss goals if you have a weight loss buddy (social support or accountability partner). Who are your weight loss buddies? It helps to have more than one because life's events are unpredictable.

3 reasons why weight loss buddies help you succeed:

1. Accountability - A little healthy weight loss competition never hurts a cause. Don't forget, you must have significant fat loss for weight loss to be healthy and lasting. This requires you to lose weight the right way---no fad dieting or quick weight loss gimmicks.

Its important to keep in mind that you are trying to change your lifestyle to one of health and fitness. The weight loss is just one tool to help you get it done. You have to be committed for a lifetime---through the ups, downs, successes and failures.

2. Expectations - All other things being equal, people will generally live up or down to expectations. Just make sure your expectations are realistic or you will be set up to fail.

For instance, if you need to lose 100 pounds, how will you get that accomplished? Some things you may need to consider:

a. Have you really ever exercised for an extended period of time? If you have no experience to draw from, you will need to take baby steps, like starting with walking.

b. How long have you been inactive? If its been awhile since you exercised, you won't be able to do an intense circuit training workout right away.

c. How quickly do you want to lose 100 pounds? Although you may lose pounds quickly at the beginning of your exercise program (like 10 pounds the first week), it will be tougher to burn fat and lose weight in the weeks and months ahead. For example, losing 2 pounds and burning .5% body fat will be good progress during many weeks. So, it may take a year or longer to lose 100 pounds the right way.

d. You may have health problems that slow your progress. If you have diabetes or high blood pressure, you will need your doctor's clearance before beginning an exercise program. You will have to start out slower than someone who is more healthy. The good news is that these two conditions can be reversed with exercise and healthy, managed nutrition.

3. Support - Its a long, never-ending road to burning fat, losing weight, changing your body and maintaining weight. Support from someone going through the same thing is very important.

Also, inform family members and friends early on what your body-changing intentions are....the more support, the better. On the opposite end, avoid people who will have a negative attitude about your weight loss intentions. There are many would-be haters out there to help you fail.

Here are some examples of good weight loss buddies:

1. Spouse
2. Friend
3. Personal trainer
4. Brother/Sister
5. Exercise group (bootcamps, group classes, neighborhood groups, running groups)
6. Teammate
7. Co-worker
8. Social website

Basically, your weight loss buddy could be anyone who knows what you are attempting to do and will encourage you along the way (even tough love if necessary). Weight loss buddies are great if they are serious about fitness and have made commitments similar to your own. You hold each other accountable.

What can you do about cellulite on your legs?
Nothing.  Really…..nothing.
Don’t waste your money on special creams, machines, or diet pills that claim they will eliminate the cellulite because it is simply NOT true!

I took these pictures to illustrate a weighted step up, and then I sat there and thought “Ugh, look at my legs!  They are disgusting, I cannot put this picture on the internet for the world to see my cellulite!”   The younger version of me would put on capris so no one could see my “imperfections”.

stepups

This new, older (wiser?) , THIS IS REAL LIFE version of me could care less. Yes, I still have moments of wishing my legs were perfect, but they are not…….so I just need to move forward.

While it is true that my legs have cellulite, it is also true that:

*I have 4 healthy little boys
*I have an amazing wonderful boyfriend.
*I am awesome.

Focus on your strengths and embrace your imperfections!
